Start Your Journey With Open Water.

  • "School" Work and knowledge building

The first step is to complete the knowledge reviews. There are five sections and a final exam you must pass before we move on to the confined water (pool) section of the course. If you haven’t been to school for a while don’t worry, it’s not that hard, but it is foundational and I will build upon that knowledge at the pool. There are a few options for completing this section. The most popular option is to do it online at your own pace. Many shops charge extra for E-Learning but it’s included in my price. I am also happy to teach this section if desired.

  • Pool Work

Pool sessions will be conducted in Merritt Athletic clubs heated indoor pool (pictured above) which we use year round (If you’re a member we can offer a discount on the class). There are 2 required sessions and a third strongly recommended session. In the third session we will put you in a hood and gloves to prepare you for your checkout dives in cooler water if you’re doing them here. If you’re going somewhere warm to checkout I like to do a buoyancy clinic during the third class so you’re truly ready. Classes are on Sundays from 12-4. If you have your own pool I am happy to travel to you for pool sessions.

  • Checkout Dives

The final step to getting certified is to apply what you learned at the pool in open water. For us Marylanders that generally means a lake or quarry. There are other options though. If you’re getting certified for a trip we can write your referral and they can finish this section when you arrive or if you’re interested in dive travel with us there are options.
